Extracorporal fertilization (ECF)

Helen Schneider Hospital for Women, a part of Rabin Medical Center, represents a brand new approach to obstetrics and gynecology. A decision about the establishment of a specialized Helen Schneider Hospital for Women was taken basing on a concept of comprehensive woman health care during the whole life cycle. This concept is currently recognized at leading medical institutions worldwide. Helen Schneider Hospital provides all types of qualified care and assistance at every stage of a woman’s life. The level of medical services at clinic is in compliance with the highest world standards.
At Helen Schneider Hospital, like everywhere in the world, ECF technique is considered basic for the treatment of infertility. An artificial insemination is widely used in cases of uterine tube pathologies, endometriosis, endocrine disorders, deficiency or decreased motility of spermatozoids, presence of antibodies to spermatozoids as well as in cases of infertility due to unknown reasons.
Examination prior to ECF

The first stage for marriage partners who address our center for treatment of infertility is an examination of both partners. For women it is usually USI and analyses of blod for hormones, AIDS, hepatitis and syphilis. For men spermogram is performed. If appropriate, genetic analyses are performed. Average duration of the examination is 2 weeks. A decision as for the infertility treatment method is taken basing on the results from the examination.

Preimplantation diagnostics is a method designed to investigate embryo obtained from ECF before it is transferred into the uterus. Using modern genetic technologies, an embryo consisting of only 4-8 cells may be examined. This diagnostic technique provides for detection of major congenital abnormalities in embryo as well as hereditary chromosome diseases, such as Down's syndrome, hemophilia, etc. In addition, by means of preimplantation diagnostics a sex of a future child may be determined.

Modern reproductive technologies include not only artificial insemination but also endoscopic methods of treatment of infertility. In some cases, using special equipment a uterine tubes patency may be recovered. This procedure is performed by hysteroscopy (through vaginal opening and uterine cavity) or by laparoscopy (through the front abdominal wall). In cases where treatment with endoscopic methods is not efficient, female patients are generally recommended to undergo ECF. Sometimes prior to extracorporal fertilization it may be necessary to complete treatment prescribed by dpecialists with the use of endoscopy (e.g., intrauterine septotomy, adhesiotomy, etc.). It will be better to undergo endoscopic treatment and ECF at the same medical center (succession and collegiality in medicine are always favourable for patients).
The onset of pregnancy and successful child-bearing are possible in almost all cases (except those of surgically removed uterus). Female patients aged 40-50 are capable for child-bearing in most cases. ECF technique is used when pregnancy is not contraindicated for reasons of a woman’s health.
